Printing companies 2026: FSC vs. PEFC — which standard when?
Printing companies and publishers like to advertise “sustainable printing” – a general claim that is liable to legal warning. Substantiation requires concrete references to standards: FSC, PEFC, Blauer Engel or EU Ecolabel.
FSC (Forest Stewardship Council): Internationally recognised standard for sustainable forestry. Three categories: FSC 100 % (completely from FSC forests), FSC Recycled (from recycled paper), FSC Mix (mixture with controlled wood sources). Strict audits regarding biodiversity, indigenous rights, and occupational safety. International recognition. Licence number required (C-XXXXXX) on products and in advertising.
PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification): European alternative, less stringent social standards, accepts more national systems. More widespread in the DACH region (German forests predominantly PEFC-certified). Licence number (PEFC/04-31-XX).
Blauer Engel UZ-72: Specifically for printing papers with a high proportion of recycled content (at least 95 % recycled paper). Strict pollutant limits. Monitored by the UBA (German Environment Agency).
EU Ecolabel: For printing papers with emission limits (noise, water, energy). Official EU seal.
What does NOT count as compliant: “Sustainable paper” without a certificate. “From domestic forestry” without FSC/PEFC. “Recycled paper” without specifying the proportion of recycled content (according to EN 643).
Reformulation examples: ❌ “Sustainable printing on recycled paper” → ✓ “Printing on Blauer Engel paper (95 % recycled content, UZ-72), carbon offset according to the Gold Standard + 100 % green electricity from the printing company”. ❌ “From certified wood” → ✓ “FSC-Mix paper (FSC Licence C-128467) on machine 4 — low-migration inks (REACH-compliant)”.
Conclusion: Printing companies must specifically state their standard certificates in every advertising statement. General terms such as “carbon neutral printing” will be liable to legal warning from 27 September 2026.
