SMEs in 2026: Compliance Without Corporate Resources

The challenge for SMEs: large corporations have compliance departments, external consulting budgets, marketing approval workflows, and specialised law firms. The German Mittelstand (10-249 employees) doesn’t have any of that – but still needs to become EmpCo compliant.

Pragmatic approach for SMEs. Step 1: identify a champion – a marketing or compliance manager takes on EmpCo as a secondary task (10-20% of working time for 3 months, then 5% ongoing).

Step 2: subscribe to Empcora Pro – €59/month for 5 domains, weekly re-scan, AI reformulations, evidence management.

Step 3: create a standard template – for all marketing texts, an approval template: pre-check with Empcora, if violations occur, AI reformulation or deletion, documentation of approval.

Step 4: prioritise external certifications – instead of making your own statements, use recognised third-party seals: ISO 14001 (1-2 years implementation, €5,000-€15,000), B Corp (4-6 months, €1,000-€2,000), EMAS (alternative to ISO 14001).

Step 5: employee training once a year – 1-hour workshop with all marketing/sales/service employees.

Common mistakes: starting compliance too late (those who only react after the first warning pay 5-20 times more). Trying to solve all problems at once (instead, use the Pareto principle). No employee awareness. Maintaining your own seals.

Time investment: initial setup 40-80 hours over 3 months. Ongoing monitoring 4-8 hours per month. In case of a warning, 20-40 hours of special effort.
