Tourism 2026: “Carbon Neutral Flights” are Dead – What Happens Instead?

The tourism industry faces an existential question: “Climate neutral travel” through compensation is per-se prohibited from 27 September 2026 (EmpCo Annex I No. 4b). Atmosfair compensation surcharges must no longer be advertised as “climate neutral”. What alternatives are there?

What is prohibited: “Climate neutral package tour”. “Carbon neutral flight” through Atmosfair / Climate Austria / myclimate. “We offset your flight emissions” as sole climate communication. “Net Zero Hotel” through pure electricity compensation.

What remains permissible: Demonstrate genuine CO₂ reduction — e.g., “Flight with 50 % Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF, Verified Sustainability Standard)”. Hotel with Green-Key certification + concrete reduction: “Water consumption -32 % vs. industry average”. Directly compare transport by train or electric car.

Reformulation examples: ❌ “Climate neutral package tour to Mallorca” → ✓ “Package tour to Mallorca with carbon offsetting Gold Standard (350 kg CO₂eq, VER Gold Standard 2024) + Green-Key certified hotel”. ❌ “Carbon neutral flight” → ✓ “Flight with 15 % SAF content (Sustainable Aviation Fuel) — CO₂ balance 0.18 kg CO₂eq/passenger-km vs. standard 0.23 kg”.

Important note: Pure compensation may be stated transparently alongside reduction, but must not be sold as “climate neutral”. “This journey emits 350 kg CO₂eq per person. We are investing in Gold Standard projects as compensation — this does NOT make the journey climate neutral, but supports global climate projects” — this is permissible.

Not all Atmosfair advertising needs to be removed: Atmosfair itself remains permissible as an additional engagement programme. Only the advertising “climate neutral through Atmosfair compensation” must be removed.
