What does it mean?
"CO₂ equivalent" (CO₂eq) is a unit of measurement used to make the climate impact of different greenhouse gases comparable. The climate impact of a gas is expressed in relation to that of carbon dioxide (CO₂), using the Global Warming Potential (GWP). Stating the GWP value (typically GWP100, based on IPCC AR6) is essential for traceability. From 27 September 2026, the EmpCo Directive requires clear substantiation of every CO₂eq claim, as otherwise a violation of UWG § 5 may occur. In particular, the scope (1, 2 or 3) and the methodology used (e.g. ISO 14064-1) must be transparently disclosed in order to avoid misleading practices pursuant to UWG § 5b.
