What does it mean?
The GHG Protocol (Greenhouse Gas Protocol) is an internationally recognised standard for calculating and reporting greenhouse gas emissions (Scope 1, 2 and 3). From 27 September 2026, the application of the GHG Protocol is essential to justify substantiated environmental claims in accordance with the EmpCo Directive (EU 2024/825) and UWG § 5. Without a transparent and comprehensible CO₂ account based on the GHG Protocol, generic claims such as "climate-friendly" or "CO₂-neutral" are to be classified as misleading and may lead to warnings. The use of the GHG Protocol creates the necessary foundation for reliable communication of climate protection measures.

What you can write instead
Instead of "CO₂-neutral", state concrete reduction targets — "We have reduced our Scope 1+2 emissions by 32% since 2020, calculated according to GHG Protocol and verified to ISO 14064-1."
