„Organic Cotton"

What does it mean?
The term 'organic cotton' is a generic environmental claim which, from 27 September 2026 onwards, may no longer be used without appropriate substantiation in accordance with the EmpCo Directive (EU 2024/825). In order to make the claim legally compliant, presentation of a recognised certificate such as GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) or OCS (Organic Content Standard) is required. Under § 5 UWG and the EmpCo Directive (EU 2024/825), generic sustainability and fashion claims without transparent supply chains or recognised certification are misleading – this principle applies directly to organic cotton. The mere claim that cotton is organically grown without certification is therefore inadmissible.
