„Scope 1+2"

What does it mean?
Scope 1 encompasses direct emissions from sources owned or controlled by the company (e.g. vehicle fleet, heating). Scope 2 refers to indirect emissions from purchased energy (e.g. electricity, district heating). EU Directive 2024/825 (EmpCo) tightens the requirements for substantiation of environmental claims, which also applies to statements regarding Scope 1+2 emissions. Where Scope 1+2 emissions are communicated, a transparent methodology (GHG Protocol) and ideally independent verification (e.g. ISO 14064-1) are required in order to avoid misleading practices under § 5 UWG. A mere statement without context or evidence is not sufficient.
