What does it mean?
SFDR Article 9 defines the strictest category for financial products with a sustainable investment objective that is explicit and measurable. In contrast to Art. 8 funds, which merely promote environmental or social characteristics, Art. 9 aims to achieve positive impacts on sustainability factors. Delegated Regulation (EU) 2022/1288 specifies the requirements for disclosure obligations and the calculation of sustainable investments. BaFin and ESMA intensified controls in 2024, which led to the downgrading of many funds from Art. 9 to Art. 8 because the criteria were not met (see BaFin press release of 15 March 2024). A fixed 70% threshold for sustainable investments is not codified in the SFDR; however, this quota is frequently regarded as a benchmark for the fund's orientation.
