„Zero Waste"

What does it mean?
'Zero Waste' is a misleading claim if it is not substantiated by a recognised standard. EU Directive 2024/825 (EmpCo) introduces a generic prohibition on unsubstantiated environmental claims in Annex I No. 2 UCPD. As 'Zero Waste' has no generally recognised definition, substantiation is essential. § 5 Abs. 1 UWG requires that commercial practices must not be liable to mislead the consumer. The TRUE Zero Waste Certification (GBCI) is an established standard that requires comprehensive waste assessment and reduction. Alternatively, the company's specific waste rate must be transparently disclosed in order to substantiate the claim.
